| New Paltz is in the heart of the Mid-Hudson Valley and offers many attractions to its visitors. Outdoor activities include some of the world's best rock climbing, hiking, cross-country skiing, and fall leaf peeping. There are numerous historical sites, parks, and lakes in the area. The Mohonk Preserve, the Shawangunk ridge, and the Minnewaska State Park are all in the area. There are many wineries in the vicinity that are open to the public. The village of New Paltz offers cultural and recreational events. Dining and shopping are available, as well as scenic walking tours of such areas as Huguenot Street (one of the oldest streets in America), with its stone houses built by the French Huguenots who settled the region. Local cafes and pubs offer open-mic nights for music, poetry readings, independent film showings, and other events. The State University of New York at New Paltz offers seminars, concerts, and theatrical events, in addition to undergraduate and graduate programs.
